Seebe, Alberta

July 20, 2025

Our next destination was a short 3-night stay near civilization so that we could get some errands run before our house guests were due to arrive on Monday in Banff. The day began with brilliant sunshine, but it was not to last.

A beautiful morning drive through Kananaskis country

Our temporary home was Rafter 6 Ranch which is primarily an outfit that provides horseback riding excursions, but they also have a giant field available for rustic camping. Aside from a lone horse trailer tucked in a corner with three horses and the occasional overnight traveler, we pretty much had the place to ourselves.

When looking at Google Maps, the closest town to where we stayed appears to be Seebe. However, Wikipedia lists it as a "former hamlet", and according to the most recent census data, 0 people currently live there. While we didn't visit it (not sure there is anything there anymore), it does have an interesting past as a Calgary Power company town and even a prisoner of war camp during World War II.

In fact, we didn't really "visit" anything during our short stint at this location--we had more exciting things to do! Two of our kids and three of their friends are due to come for a visit when we move to Banff on Monday, so we spent our time planning meals, filling up the propane, grocery shopping, etc. It's just as well, because it rained much of the time of our stay anyway.

Amusing sign in town

During the course of our errands, we at least got to partake in the beautiful local scenery...

Next stop--Banff!
