Brighton Recreation Area, Michigan

October 15, 2023

We had our first rainy day take-down since we started our adventure in May of 2022. That seems hard to believe, but many of the places we have traveled to have been in more arid parts of the country (or were otherwise in the dry season) so it probably isn't all that surprising. Fortunately, the rain stopped shortly after we got under way, and we arrived at Brighton Recreatin Area under sunny skies.

A rainy start to the day

We arrived to short-lived sunshine

A nice view of Bishop Lake

A sandhill crane family visited us several times during our stay

Aside from a few hours of sun after our arrival and a few more interspersed in the week, the weather during our stay was mostly cloudy and sometimes rainy. We took walks around the grounds, did some grocery shopping, got new tires for the truck (even our son Andrew was appalled at how chewed up and worn they had gotten), and got some serious planning done for the 2024 travel year.  All in all, it was a  relaxing stay, if not terribly exciting.

This was the only "long" walk we took!

Path to the fishing pier and beach

Lots of black walnuts have fallen here at the beach

Quite the gnarly old willow The sign on the tree told of the similar medicinal effects of willow bark to aspirin

A human foosball court

The campground was quiet and peaceful during the week

On Friday, the weekenders arrived, and things became more festive

Some campers went all out with the Halloween decorations

Later that evening

That's a lot of pumpkins and gourds

The one nice sunrise we had

The cranes were quite friendly --not at all like their evil Canadian geese cousins 😉

Never saw a teddy bear skeleton before

Some of these are probably not anatomically correct--just a guess

So far, our "chasing fall" plan is working out pretty well!

On our last day, the sun was out in the morning, so we walked around and Rick finally got some photospheres worth keeping . . .

Campground had nice views of the lake! Take a look around

About a half mile from our site was a nice fishing pier you can look around

Farther along the trail was a very nice swimming beach you can look around

Rick's random musing

On our way to this location, while I was standing around waiting for the gas pump to fill up the truck (it takes a while), I couldn't help but notice how messed up the touch pad instructions were!  Do they just want to punish people in wheel chairs?

Good thing most people don't read instructions!
